I want to know whose idea it was initially to add motion detection lights to hotel rooms.
In theory, they seem like a good idea to only turn on when people are in the room, therefore saving money on energy costs and providing safe passage to the bathroom in the middle of the dark night.
In practice, they are horrible.
They temporarily blind you and shock you into immediate daylight.
Recently, I have stayed in three hotels where they have these lights.
In the first one, I kind of liked them because it was a soft light at foot level just to help guide you into the bathroom at night. Not bad at all.
The second one had the same foot light, but it stayed on for at least 15 minutes after you left the bathroom, making it difficult to fall back to sleep with a light on.
The third one was a nightmare. The bathroom area was separated by a barn door and had not one but two motion detector lights.
The first light triggered the moment you stepped into the area with a blinding mirror and overhead light, creating instant daylight not only for you, but for anyone else in the room who was still asleep (but not for long).
So you had to quickly try to close the barn door before turning off the light with the switch, which then triggered the second light in the toilet area because you moved close to it.
It became a game to try to turn off the lights as quickly as possible and not move so they didn't turn on again.
After one night of fighting the light battle, I figured out I could stop the light from turning on in the toilet room by hanging a towel over it. This then created a problem because the light would turn off in the middle of a shower because it didn't detect any motion.
There was no way to cover the other light switch since it was in the middle of the wall with nothing nearby to hang something from.
Insanity.
