One of sayings I always heard with one of the the first groups I traveled with was "roll with the punches." Another always said "don't sweat the small stuff."
What happens when lots of little stuff turns into really big stuff?
Here's my current situation. I'm on a river cruise in Europe, weather and water issues on the river are causing a major trip deviation. This isn't just a missed port. We haven't left the embarkation port yet, but that's not the real problem.
Early tomorrow morning, instead of sleeping in and leisurely making our way through the locks to our next port, we have to pack up our cabins, load buses, drive several hours, and go to another ship, unpack into new cabins, and then take each day as it comes.
The talk now is that we'll go on to this new ship and it won't be able to move either, so in a few days, we'll have to pack up again, board the buses, and head back to the original ship so we'll be in place to disembark, which means packing and unpacking again.
The river cruise is turning into a bus trip.
We're going to miss lots of experiences and ports, not to mention the relaxation that comes with unpacking only once and relaxing on a ship.
I know nobody can control the weather, but this is major.
The crew of this Viking ship has been awesome trying to tell us what is going on and keeping smiles on their faces, but you can tell they're bummed about the tips they're going to lose.
How would you handle a situation like this? What do you think should happen? What would you ask for? How would you ask for it?
I would ask for compensation. Serious compensation.
